How can you make a new chemical? In this activity, 5th-grade students will apply the understanding of chemical vs. physical changes in an inquiry-based lab (NGSS ). Students then make connections from the lab to the field of chemical engineering, learning what chemical engineering is, and finding out how it applies to things that they use in daily life. In the culminating project-based assessment, students create a life story of their favorite object through the lens of a chemical engineer.
Purchase includes two full 60-minute lesson plans in 5E format, answer key, lab station directions, project description and criteria, student project planning worksheet, project grading checklist, as well as free access to corresponding career exploration including virtual job shadow video, simulation, and downloadable career information sheet in English and Spanish.
